Today's Tip

If you are reading this you are probably an aquarist. A wonderful hobby of which there is no exact science. There are so many variables. Many will have discovered their own secrets, and although there are a few definite "what not to dos" there is a plethora of "variable rights".
Today's tip is regarding the water temperature of a tank. When fish are content in their water temperature they will swim with dorsal fins displayed and will not be sluggish. One does not want to freeze or fry the fish, that is obvious, but above all, with a few exceptions, a sharp increase in temperature be it up or down will induce shock. Shock leads to a weakening of the fish's own protective mechanisms and will lead to disease or death. There are few places in the world that have a constant diurnal temperature range - the hottest countries, where many of our fish have originated from, during the night without cloud cover the fish may experience a 15 degree drop and much more. Therefore do not worry when you have a power cut in Northern Ireland. The drop in temperature will be gradual as will the heating up process when the electric comes back on. ( the drop will only be from the temperature the tank is at to room temperature - maybe 10 degrees or so)
If you have advice please share it.
